North Carolina Requires E-Cigarette Registration, Limits Sales to FDA-Approved Products
The State Senate Judiciary Committee endorsed legislation establishing an e-cigarette registry, permitting only FDA-approved products in North Carolina. Most e-cigarettes currently on shelves lack FDA authorization. The bill awaits Senate Rules Committee review.
According to the North Carolina Youth Tobacco Survey, e-cigarette use among high schoolers rose by 78% and middle schoolers by 48% from 2018 to 2019. Many schools now use e-cigarette detectors, and the state and districts have joined lawsuits against manufacturers like Juul, resulting in a $47.8 million settlement.
